Community Playground Project
CFL is now raising funds to build an outdoor Play area at the Thorsby Recreation Complex. Our current play area consists of an older wooden play station suited for children over the age of 5. There is no equipment for toddlers, there is no designated shaded picnic area and limitations to what exists. We would like to increase the outdoor free play in our community. This project consists of installing several toddler pieces of equipment, building a covered “gazebo” picnic area, building a dirt peddle bike track, and installing new playground equipment. This project will reach every age of child in our community. To date we have raised over $40,000 however the current fundraising that our association is involved in is insufficient for the project we are undertaking. With an estimated Playground proposal cost at over $100,000 which we have secured by qualifying for the CFEP grant. More details to come.
Our Playground project will be creating opportunities for fun, imagination and new challenges for the children in our community. Our goal is to provide a fun and safe play area that inspires our children to stay active at no cost to them.

Fitness Equipment
Community Fit Ltd's initial project is to provide fitness equipment and supply’s needed for group fitness classes held at the Thorsby Arctic Spas Rec Centre. Specifically spin bikes, step benches, bosu’s, kettle bell weights, dumb bells, medicine balls, boxing gloves and gear, suspension trainers, foam rollers, body bars, and much more. With our project we hope to facilitate classes such as Spin, Spin and Sculpt, Aerobics, Boot Camp, Kick Boxing, Exercise for the Older Adult, children and teen programs and more. As you can see we will reach every age group. We have also provided an octagon that the local Cheerleading Club and Gymnastics Club can use. CFL has recently purchased equipment for the local Cheer club and some great additions to the weight room, including a Hoist 4400 multi gym and a set of new rubber hex dumbbells. This project was sponsored by Community Fit Ltd, The Village of Thorsby, Government of Alberta and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

Thorsby Trail System
When considering it’s options for green space access, Thorsby has an incredible, natural resource running through it: Weed Creek. This little creek has created a beautiful green zone. Unfortunately, there is limited access to this area. Some of the local landowners have made it clear that they are willing to allow a community trail system to be developed along it’s banks. This opportunity of trail development could become a huge
asset to Thorsby. People long to be outside, to unplug from the
daily grind of our modern lives. The proposed trail system does not need to be overly-built, costing thousands of dollars to build and maintain. In fact, a simple trail to walk, hike, or bike along would promote the best natural experience.
Most trail enthusiasts prefer narrower trails. Whether they are riding a mountain bike, running or hiking the trail, or exploring on horseback, these users want to experience a close connection to nature. Singletrack provides this better than roads and separates recreationists from the world of the automobile. Trees and
shrubs may create a tunnel of green, tall flowers may reach eye level, wildlife may cross the path, immersing visitors in the natural world. The experience just isn't the same on an
open, wide road. The narrow nature of singletrack makes these trails exciting for a variety of users and provides an invigorating backcountry experience.
The best method for getting a successful natural trail system established is through volunteerism. Usually, a small group of like-minded individuals pursue the initial phase of development. After planning and logistics are dealt with, they then approach the local municipality and landowners. At this time, a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU), is written for any impacted landowners and or businesses along the proposed trail network. Once all the legal is in place, that is when the fun starts. Through promotion and hard work, organized trail building events can be initiated. This creates a sense of community, generating a feeling of “ownership” of the new trail system. As a result, trail maintenance, policing, and general use will continue to thrive as the years pass. Volunteerism in this sense, is a win-win for the Municipality.
